Mingary Castle, Isle of Mull

Built in the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century as part of a series of similar polygon-shaped curtain-walled castles protecting the Western Isles, the castle has had an eventful history, even being slighted by an escaped galleon from the Spanish Armada.
It has been altered for defensive purposes many times and finally became a home in the early eighteenth century only to be garrisoned in 1745. Having been converted again in the 1780s it was then abandoned in the 1840s and was in a perilous condition as the volcanic schist that it is built upon was fracturing.
Working closely with Historic Scotland to develop proposals, Shaw & Jagger proposed works that have consolidated the cliff face and restored the ruined residential accommodation back to an 18th-century family home.
