Hellifield Peel

Site Sensitivities: Scheduled Ancient Monument / Listed Building / Green Belt

Hellifield Peel in North Yorkshire was a ruin for over 60 years until its re-construction into a large private country house. Dating from the 14th Century, the Listed castle and Scheduled Ancient Monument has been developed in close collaboration with Historic England due to its historical importance. The project was the first Scheduled Ancient Monument post World War II to be brought back into residential use and was followed closely by Channel 4’s Grand Designs programme. The development has also been a case study for many similar projects across the UK.

With more traditional rooms on the lower floors, the completed house includes a contemporary self-contained apartment within the roof that commands views over the surrounding countryside. As part of the sustainable strategy, a ground source heat pump was incorporated within the grounds that supplies the hot water needs for the house.

Status: Completed 2006
