Lingholm Main House

Lingholm is a Grade II listed country estate on the shores of Derwentwater in the Lake District. Built in 1873 the house was frequently let as a holiday home and Beatrix Potter spent nine summers there which was the inspiration for many of her Peter Rabbit stories and indeed Mr McGregors garden can be found here which are being restored as part of the proposals. Shaw & Jagger were commissioned in 2013 to draw up proposals for the house and estate including the refurbishment and extension of the main house, construction of a new swimming pool and café, the conversion of the Lodge into a holiday home, and the construction of a replacement boathouse on the lake shore as well as the refurbishment and extension of several other estate buildings.

Working closely with the client and the Lake District National Park Authority, we have developed proposals that complement the historic nature of the existing buildings whilst creating a contemporary feel for the new ones.

Most recently we have completed the extension of the house to provide private living accommodation for the owners of the estate, including a new living room/orangery, study and master bedroom with long-distance views down the lake. Due to the steep pitch and to tie in with the eaves lines, proportions and material palette of the existing building this was designed traditionally to compliment the historic house. The work was completed in summer 2021.
